Stewart's Somerset Cycle Ride Raises £500 for SURE

Stewart Kitch of South Chard, raised £500 for SURE by completing Stewart's Somerset Cycle Ride.

Following my radiation treatment at the Beacon Centre in Taunton, I found that the S.U.R.E. charity (Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment) have funded much of the equipment in the building in our County Town.

As I was able to cycle a short distance across Taunton for most treatments, which totalled 75 miles,  I thought a sponsored cycle ride across the county was an appropriate fund raiser.

Because I live in the southern edge of Somerset, I proposed to cycle from South to North, in 3 stages, a total distance of 62 miles according to Google maps.  I completed a short section (12 miles) between Ashcott and Cheddar on July 4 as I was on a reconnaissance mission and found the B3151 not very cycle - friendly.

Then on a very hot July 23rd, I re-started at Cheddar and followed NCR 26 – The Strawberry Line to Yatton Station, thence on B3133 and minor roads to Cleveden, Walton-in-Gordano and finally Portishead point. (21 miles and was slightly lost once).

I hoped to enjoy this on fine days with the wind and sun on my back, but be careful what you wish for as that day was so hot!

I completed the South Somerset to Ashcott ride on September 2nd in dry weather.  This took the B 3167 from Devon border to South Chard, then through it Forton and Chard to the NCR (National Cycle Route) 33 to Ilminster.  Then the B 3168 to Curry Rivel and Langport,  through High Ham to Pedwell and Ashcott (refreshed at the Albion Inn). (28 miles).

You will notice that this made the distance 61 miles, but don't worry as I had to ride up to the start from home – another 1.3!

Thank you for your generous donations which total approximately £500 + gift aid on September 6th.  Also to my wife, Margaret for her help with the “team car” to bring me home.
